The 9th Regional Senior Mission Leaders Course was held from 10th to 21st February 2014 at the International Peace Support Training Centre (IPSTC), Karen. The course attracted twenty three participants from Burundi, Djibouti, Kenya, Rwanda, Seychelles, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania and Uganda.
The closing ceremony was held at IPSTC on 21st February 2014 and presided over by the General Officer Commanding Eastern Command, Major General Rono as guest of honour.
In his remarks, Major General Rono expressed gratitude on behalf of the Ministry of Defence to each and every participant for making the RSMLC course a great success and for successfully completing the course. He reminded the participants that as senior leaders, they are required to continue pursuing some of the issues posing a threat to the African continent as they go about their daily work so as to perfect what they have gained from the course.
Major General Rono challenged the participant to focus on the steps that will keep the EA region on the path towards improved regional peace and security for social and economic development in order to succeed as future leaders of peace support missions. He reiterated that peace operations are important conflict intervention mechanism that cannot be undertaken in isolation of political, economic, social and humanitarian considerations.
He urged all the participants to reflect on the experiences gained, lessons learned and the personal networks that have been established as an opportunity for enhancing the capacity in delivering more efficient and effective peace support operations in future. He hoped that the training will contribute to the overarching objective of establishing well functioning peace and security institutions that are fundamental cornerstones for sustainable development in the region.
Major General Rono concluded by expressing gratitude to the European Union for their continuous support to the regional peace operations capacity building through the sponsorship of the programme. He hoped that the partnership will continue in future to allow development of a critical mass of senior leaders in the region capable of confronting the challenges of contemporary conflicts.
Also present during the ceremony were Maj Gen (Rtd) Cyrille Ndayirukiye, Director EASF, Brigadier Robert Kabage, Director IPSTC, General (Rtd) Henry Anyidoho, Director of studies and mentors.
