As the world commemorates the World AIDS Day every 1st day of the month of December, the Kenya Defence Forces were not left out. Kenya Navy personnel, their families and friends came together to celebrate this crucial day and stand in solidarity with the families affected by this pandemic in line with this year’s theme “Communities make the difference”.

HIV/AIDS has over the years continued to destroy families and the Kenya Defence Forces has not been spared. The KDF command and leadership has relentlessly continued to raise awareness to its personnel to remain positive in mind despite ones status since there no cure found yet.

The Commander Kenya Navy Base (KNB) Mtongwe Brig Jimson Mutai officiated the celebrations on behalf of the Commander Kenya Navy where he asked the congregation to observe one minute silence in honor of those succumbed to the disease. Brig Mutai urged the service personnel and families to exercise caution when mingling with others in the society by ensuring they are aware of their status since service personnel and their dependants have being affected in one or the other by this dreadful disease. “Let us all remain focused to where we are going. Let’s not engage into activities that will put us in vulnerable situations. As KDF there are measures that have been put in place to mitigate the spread of this disease”, said Brig Mutai.

The Senior Medical officer (SMO) Kenya Navy Colonel Japheth Ngundo said that there are mitigation measures put in place in Kenya Navy towards prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS infection. He reminded the families to use the medical facilities in the camp for testing to ensure proper measures are taken in good time.

The Senior Nursing Officer Lieutenant Colonel Vincent Omondi said that KDF has always been in the forefront of raising awareness and initiating programs geared towards combating the epidemic with the aim of reducing cases related to the disease. “Since the breakout of the epidemic, a comprehensive care clinic facility was put at the Kenya Navy sickbay to help the infected and affected individuals. Prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV has for the last three (3) years been very successful in Kenya Navy sickbay with deliveries of HIV free new born”, said Lt Col Omondi.

In attendance during the celebrations were the Deputy Fleet Commander Colonel Lawrence Gituma, Chief of Operations Colonel Thomas Ng’ang’a, Chief of Personnel Colonel Peter Korir and other senior officers.
