In line with the its vision of establishing full functional regional hospitals the Kenya Defence Forces inaugurated an operating theater at the Mtongwe Sick Bay in the Navy Headquarters Mombasa County on 7th August 2019.

The inauguration was marked by a team of six doctors led by the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) Director of Medical Services Major General (Dr) George Ng’ang’a carrying out a successful operation on a KDF personnel in the theater. The operation known as, hernioplasty, is a type of hernia repair surgery where a mesh patch is sewn over the weakened region of tissue. A hernia occurs when an organ or internal tissue breaks through a hole in the muscles.

Before the inaugural operation, the DMS paid a courtesy call to the Commander Kenya Navy Major General Levi Mghalu and was later\briefed on the state of the Kenya Navy Base Sick Bay by the Senior Medical Officer (SMO) Colonel (Dr) Japhet Ngundo. He was further taken for a walk around the hospital accompanied by Senior Base Medical Officer Lt Col (Dr) Diana Wambua where he interacted with the medical personnel at the facility.

The operationalization of the operating theater is an achievement geared towards enhancing service delivery, reducing expenditure incurred on surgical services previously outsourced from private hospitals, optimal utilization of the specialist in their fields of work, managing emergency cases thus reducing the number of referrals such as minor pediatric and maternity cases.

The facility is equipped with an anesthesia machine and other state of the art equipment meant to see its smooth operation. In addition, qualified and skilled medical personnel have been deployed to work round the clock while managing the theatre.

Speaking after the operation, Major General (Dr) Ng’ang’a urged the Kenya Navy medical team to give their best when called upon to render their services to the Navy personnel and the public at large. He further said that plans to ensure the facility offers prompt, convenient and quality services have been put in place. The hospital is set to acquire more specialized personnel and equipment to address the ever changing healthcare challenges. He insisted on the need to focus on preventive measures rather than the curative aspect to the medical personnel.

The inauguration of the theatre is in line with the KDF vision of establishing fully functional regional hospitals whose main agenda is bringing quality health care services closer to the KDF personnel, their families and the public at large.

During the operation, Major General (Dr) Ng’ang’a was assisted by Colonel (Dr) Francis Kuria, (surgeon), Lieutenant Colonel (Dr) Steve Mutungi (surgeon), Major (Dr) Vincent Mtongwe, (anesthetist) Captain (Dr) Stephen Nzai, Warrant Officer Class II Lemuria Mesula, theatre medical technicians and nurses.
